What is Label Printer ?
Label Printer is a FileMaker Pro Solution that makes it easy to print Labels of various sizes: one at a time, in small batches, or whole pages at once.
Most software packages provide templates for printing labels using various merge and printing features. However, as virtually all printers have moved away from the older tractor feed (dot matrix) printing method to sheet feed (Ink Jet or Laser) printing, the ability to print just one or a small batch of labels hasels has of labels hass hasabels has
O become more difficult.
Label Printer allows users to specify precisely which and how many labels of a label sheet to print, thereby permitting the more efficient use of label printing sheets.
Label Printer can be used as a stand-alone solution, or linked with other FileMaker Pro databases to provide enhanced Label printing output.
Thank you for using Label Printer!
I am grateful to all of my customers who support me with their honesty and recommendations for improvements: this program is for you!
I would also like to thank my Beta testers who helped me prepare this Label Printer solution for distribution and encouraged me to make it available to a larger audience.
A special thanks goes to Ayako Miyagawa who assisted me with the graphics for this solution.
I also thank all the FileMaker Pro developers and usersB
that participate on the FileMaker Pro list at fmpro@blueworld.com making it a community for development, support, and friendship.
Single or Multiple labels can be printed.
Labels can be printed at any location on a
label sheet.
Recalls remaining label positions for quick printing.
Labels can be imported from a text file or
another FileMaker Pro file.
Import a custom logo or graphic to enhance
your printed output.
Default label text can be stored to quickly print
frequently used labels.
Label Printer can be easily integrated with other
FileMaker Pro solutions.

fandrich@kagi.com
Please include the words "Label Printer" in your subject line.
I have also set up a web site for Label Printer, and it can be accessed at
Changed slightly the Label Printer mailing address to conform to official postal guidelines (Thanks Mark). Made small changes to scripting. Changed the Re
adMe file extension to .doc from .txt to improve compatibility with Microsoft Word. Added page graphics to show multiple pages being printed.
First public release as Shareware. Greatly revised, this version supports many of the most common Avery Labels, and can be integrated with all FileMaker Pro (v3.0 and greater) solutions.
FiFyrst released as a simple integrated Label Printing utility that I bundled together with my other FileMaker Pro Solutions.
Label Printer is a database solution and requires a copy of FileMaker Pro version 3.0 or 4.0.
A beta version of FileMaker Pro is currently (10/97) available from Claris Corp. at
http://www.filemaker.com
http://www.claris.com
and FileMaker Pro can be purchased from better software vendors and resellers.
Label Printer can be used with FileMaker Pro on the following platforms:
Apple Macintosh (System 7 or greater)
Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows NT*
The interface has been designeB
d to fit in a 256 colour 640x480 (15
) screen.
The hard disk space requirement for Label Printer and related files is approximately 3 MB.
*I have not tested this.
As the majority of my Label Printer customers will likely be using Avery brand labels or a compatible product, I draw your attention to the following notice from Avery Dennison:
Avery Dennison recommends that a sheet of labels be fed only once through a laser printer. Our guarantee of jam-free performance extends only to a sheet of labels that has been fed through a laser printer a single time. The heat and tight paper path of a laser printer ca
n cause the label to curl after multiple passes through the printer, which can cause the label to jam or peel off inside the printer and result in an expensive repair bill.
As there may be some issue with the reliability of Avery and other brands
label adhesives when a label page is repassed through a printer, I ask that my users read the shareware license and disclaimer. These
CE and other legal notes can be read in the License & Disclaimer note.
Please read the license agreement below.
By installing or by using Label Printer you accept all the terms and conditions of this license agreement. If you do not accept the terms of this license, close the Label Printer program and remove the Software from your computer
s memory.

You will be presented with a series of blank labels into which you may enter your data. Each label may be different.
Label Printer makes it easy to print labels in small batches, anywhere on a sheet. For larger printing jobs, the ability to import label data is useful, and Label Printer enables data to be imported from FileMaker solutions and other programs such as contact databases.
Beyond just importing label data from other programs, experienced FileMaker Pro users can also seamlessly integrate Label Printer with their own solutions.
In addition to the help notes here, please consult the Label Pr
inter Help file (Labelhlp.fp3) for detailed step-by-step information and examples of importing and integrating with Label Printer.
For a help note on importing data from other programs, select the
Using Label Printer with other programs
help note.
For a help note on importing data from other FileMaker solutions, select the
Using Label Printer with FileMaker
help note.
For a help note on integrating Label Printer with other FileMaker solutions, select the
Integrating Label Printer
help note.
Rather than making you type in label data each time, Label Printer is able to use the information you store in other programs such as contact databases or address books to print labels.
In addition to this help note, please consult the Label Printer Help file (Labelhlp.fp3) for detailed step-by-step information and examples of importing and integrating with Label Printer.
SIMPLE HOW TO:
Simply described, importing from another program can be done as follows:
In the other program:
Chose the information you want printed
2. Save the information to a file called: Labels.txt
3. Run Label Printer
4. Chose Preferences from the Script Menu
5. Set
Import File to Use
to
Labels.txt
6. In the Setup page, setup the label page
7. Click the import button
The Details:
The only tricky part of the above may be step 2. Below, I describe in more detail what needs to be done to make it all work without a hitch.
File Name:
The information or data you want printed needs to be
saved to a text file called Labels.txt
File Location:
The text file also needs to be in the same folder or directory as Label Printer.
Tab-Separated Format:
For Label Printer to import your data, the data must be saved in a format called tab-separated or tab-delineated. The option to save data as tab-separated is usually available in programs when you save. As the name suggests, tab-separated files contains the data you want to print out separated by tabs. This makes it easy for FileMa
DJker Pro to figure out where one label ends and where the next one begins.
Label Printer can also easily use information from other FileMaker Pro databases, and if you are familiar with designing with FileMaker Pro, you can integrate Label Printer with your own databases.
In addition to this help note, please consult the Label Printer Help file (Labelhlp.fp3) for detailed step-by-step information and examples of importing and integrating with Label Printer.
SIMPLE HOW TO:
Simply described, importing from another FileMaker Pro database can be accomplished as
follows:
In your FileMaker solution:
1. Find and sort the information you want printed
2. Export the information to a file called: Labels.fp3
3. Run Label Printer
4. Chose Preferences from the Script Menu
5. Set
Import File to Use
to
Labels.fp3
6. In the Setup page, setup the label page
7. Click the import button
The Details:
The only tricky part may be step 2. Below I describe in more detail what needs to be done to make it all work without a hitch.
To export the label data c
hose the following menu:
Import/Export
Export Records...
File Name:
The information or data you want printed needs to be saved to a text file called Labels.fp3
File Location:
The file also needs to be saved to the same folder or directory as Label Printer.
FileMaker Pro Format:
For Label Printer to import your data, the data should be saved as a FileMaker Pro file. A FileMaker Pro file preserves the label data as a field in the file, making importing data seamless. The
trick is to remember to chose to save the file as follows. In the
Export Records to File
dialog box, chose the following:
...in Windows 95
File Name: Labels.fp3
Save as type: FileMaker Pro (*.FP3)
...on the Macintosh
Save as: Labels.fp3
Type: FileMaker Pro
Export Field Order Dialog:
Doing the above will cause FileMaker Pro to create a file Labels.fp3 on your hard disk. The next step is to select the field to export that contains the label information you want to print.
In the Exp
+ort Field Order dialog, make sure that you have only one field selected for exporting in the Field Order box because Label Printer expects only one field in the Labels.fp3 file. When there is only one field selected in the Field Order box, you can select the
Export
button to export the data.
This is an advanced technique, and requires that you have some knowledge of scripting in FileMaker Pro.
In addition to this help note, please consult the Label Printer Help file (Labelhlp.fp3) for detailed step-by-step information and examples of importing and integrating with Label Printer.
To integrate Label Printer, you need to be able to write a script using ScriptMaker in your own database.
Integrating Label Printer is as accomplished as follows:
In Label Printer:
1) Set Prefere
nces
Remote Input Method
In Foreground
or
In Background
In your own database:
2) Select and export your label data to a file
called: Labels.fp3 (See the help note on
Using
Label Printer with FileMaker
for more details)
3) Run a script that calls the
Remote Import
script
in Label Printer.
The Details:
Step 2) is covered in more detail in the
Using Label Printer with FileMaker
Help note. Steps 1) and 3) probably need a little bit more clarificat
ion and are discussed below:
1) Preferences:
Label Type
When calling Label Printer with a script, the default label type in Preferences is used.
Remote Import Method
There are two options for the Remote Import Method:
In Foreground
and
In Background
When
In Foreground
is selected, you are led to an import setup page where the label type, row and column numbers can be set up. The number of labels is automatically set by the number of labels imported.
When
In Background
selected, the default values set in the preferences are used. This means that the default label type as well as the current label row and column position are used. Label Printer functions in the background, but the shareware dialog boxes and error messages may be seen by the user.
Import File to Use
This should be set to
Labels.fp3
2) External Scripts
If you are unsure of what this implies, I draw your attention to the FileMaker Pro manual chapter 5:
Using ScriptMaker and buttons
(FileMaker Pro 3.0 manual) or from FileMaker Pro online Help:
Scripts
Script Examples - Example: Updating another file
In your own FileMaker database, the script that calls
Remote Import
in Label Printer should look like this:
Perform Script [Sub-scripts, External:
Labelpri.fp3
More specific Registration help information can be found on the registration page itself or the read me documents. To go to the registration page, simply select Register from the Scrip menu.

After I receive your payment, I will send you a registration code: by emai

Label Sizes
--------------------------
The shareware version of Label Printer has 3 preset label sizes, based on the most common Avery label sizes.
Non-Avery brands
------------------------
Most other brands offer labels in the same sizes as the Avery labels: check your label sheet for compatibility with the Avery sizes.
A4 and metric papers
-----------------------------
European and Japanese labels may come in A4 sizes. Label Printer can easily support A4 and non-Avery sizes as well. TB
o receive a version of Label Printer with A4 sizes, send me a blank label sheet together with your registration, and I will incorporate the label size into an update.
Default Text
Label Printer enables you to store default text with a label thereby simplifying data entry. For example, If you have an address return label that you use frequently, you would select the
Use Default Text
box on the setup page to automatically select the text for printing. Each different label type can store one default text item.
SIMPLE HOW TO:
1) Select

from the Script menu.
2) Chose your desired label type from the
Default Label Type
menu.
3) Ta

Default Text cannot be selected when importing labels.
Due to a limitation of FileMaker Pro, the text entered in the Default Text field does not retain any formatting such as bold, italics
, or line spacings. The default setting for the printing label page is used instead.
Also, FileMaker Pro currently doesn
t retain the paragraph formatting in standard copy and paste operations, making it impossible to duplicate these setting between duplicate label values.
Custom Graphics
Label Printer also enables you to store logos or decorative designs. The custom graphic can then be printed at the same time as the text, and is easily accomplished by selecting the
Use Custom Graphic
box on the setup page. Each different label type can store one custom graphic.
Installing Custom Graphics

4) Paste in the field. Alternately, chose

Known Issues
The size of the
Custom Graphic
field in preferences is fixed, even though the labels come in many different sizes. In the Data Input pages however, the graphic is shown in the right size and shape for the label.
The graphics have been designed to be centered in the field space, and
; are automatically reduced to fit if too large for the field. The best way to have complete control over the placement of a graphic is to use or create a graphic exactly the same size as the label field. The size of the field is shown in light gray in the Custom Graphic field when there is no graphic installed.
FileMaker Pro
FileMaker Pro is a cross-platform database package, enabling users of Apple Macintosh, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT to run Label Printer unmodified on any machine.
Fonts
Unfortunately, although Label Printer will run on all machines supported by FileMaker Pro, it is not always possible to know beforehand which system resources, fonts, or peripherals will be used with this Software. Consequently, I have used Arial throughout this solution, not because it is a b
eautiful typeface, but because it is found on the majority of Windows, and also on some Macintosh computers. On Macintosh computers without Arial, Helvetica is automatically substituted by FileMaker Pro. The results are similar, although line spacings may vary slightly from computer to computer.
Label Printer does permit text formatting within fields, and I encourage you to experiment with your favorite typefaces and formats.
Printers
Printers often come bundled with various fonts, and
it is not always possible to predict the outcome on different devices or computers. I have tested Label Printer with a number of Ink Jet and Laser Printers from a different manufacturers, and the results have been relatively consistent.
File Names
Here I must apologize to my Apple Macintosh users. Although Microsoft has made great strides in improving their operating system, with Windows we are still stuck in the dark ages with file naming conventions. In development I found that the o
Anly consistent way to ensure that Label Printer would work with all Windows operating systems was to name the files in the DOS 8.3 form. I apologize for any angst or inconvenience this may have caused. Although the Apple Macintosh came in 1984, and the imitation in 1995, I still find myself supporting DOS users in 1997.

Kagi is only able to accept personal cheques drawn on U.S. banks in U.S. dollars. If you wish to send payment in Canadian dollars, you may do so if you register with me directly. It may take a little more time for processing and the cheque to clear however.
My international users find that using a credit card is the most convenient method: exchange rates can B8be calculated automatically by the issuing card company.
If you register with Kagi, the exchange rate on foreign currencies is calculated automatically. Due to unforeseen exchange rate fluctuation, these rates may be out of date. It is probably to your advantage to exchange your money at a local bank.
Although I prefer payment in US dollars, if all else fails, I am willing to accept cash payments in major European currencies at going exchange rates.
